Bendigo’s Climate Change & Environment Strategy 2021 – 2026

The Climate Change and Environment Strategy 2021-26 is an investment in regenerating and protecting our natural environment, but it goes beyond that. It is an investment that will improve community health and resilience, reduce power bills, increase the attractiveness of our landscapes, reduce pressures on social services and hospitals, increase economic opportunities and secure our local food network.

This Strategy was developed in consultation with the community of Greater Bendigo, agencies, stakeholders, and Council staff. Read it HERE.

Sustainable Food

In Bendigo and the region there are plenty of opportunities to become involved in sustainable food systems, with a number of local community food gardens, regular community farmers markets and many food events.

The City of Greater Bendigo produces guides to planting Indigenous plants, creating wildlife-friendly gardens, and growing your own food at home. The Home Grown booklet  is a practical guide to growing fresh fruit and vegetables in your own backyard and connecting with your community and local food growers. You can find more information about home gardening HERE.

Farmers’ Markets

Across the city and region, monthly and weekly Farmers’ Market provide our communities with fresh, locally grown and sustainably-produced food and beverages.

Bendigo and Castlemaine have weekly markets with loyal traders and customers, and there are monthly markets here and in communities across the region. Find your local market here and discover all the delicious, fresh produce on offer.

Council Plan working towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals

All actions in Bendigo’s Council Plan 2021-2025 align with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals developed by the United Nations. We are proud to work towards achieving these goals and creating a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient community.

The Bendigo community’s vision, 2021-2031 is: “Greater Bendigo celebrates our diverse community. We are welcoming, sustainable and prosperous. Walking hand-in-hand with the Traditional Custodians of this land. Building on our rich heritage for a bright and happy future.”

Greater Bendigo Climate Collaboration

The Greater Bendigo Climate Collaboration is a cross-organisational project aimed at working with all sectors of the community to reduce emissions across the City and the broader region.

This project is just beginning, but watch this space for further updates.
